Experienced Law Specialists

Wollongong holds a special place in Morrisons history and our enduring commitment to this vibrant coastal city is a testament to our community values. We actively contribute to the betterment of Wollongong’s community.

Graeme Morrison has been practising law in Wollongong and the Illawarra for over 40 years. Our solicitors all have close ties to Wollongong, having either attended the University of Wollongong or actively contributing to local community events and projects.

Our involvement in Wollongong extends to key sponsorships, exemplified by our support for the University of Wollongong (UOW), the Helensburgh Cricket Club and the Illawarra Folk Festival. These initiatives are our way of helping the Wollongong community and sparking positive transformations.

Particularly noteworthy is our partnership with UOW. We are dedicated to nurturing and mentoring the local legal advocates of tomorrow. The Morrisons Work Integrated Learning Scholarship is a prime example, offering law students invaluable hands-on experience in criminal and traffic law. Our ties with UOW run deep, with the establishment of the Morrisons Criminal Advocacy Competition in collaboration with the UOW Law Student’s Society in 2019 – aimed at honing students’ courtroom advocacy skills.

In the legal arena, Morrisons plays an active role in the Wollongong and District Law Society – advocating for critical issues affecting local legal practitioners and promoting education and mentorship for emerging lawyers.

“Every person deserves a voice in Court and it is a privilege to provide that to our clients.”

Discovering Wollongong’s legal history

Wollongong’s original courthouse, situated on Harbour Street, was finished in 1835. It was later replaced by a new courthouse nearby, which was completed in 1858 and is the oldest public building in Wollongong.

The newer courthouse, located at the corner of Harbour Street and Cliff Road, still stands on that site. Currently, it is under the ownership of Wollongong City Council and its restoration was carried out by the Old Court House Management Committee during the 1990s. This committee is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the historic building. Today, visitors can take a self-guided walking tour of the Old Courthouse and marvel at the Victorian-era architecture.

In 1887, a fresh courthouse was constructed on a location within Market Street close to the heart of the commercial district. Following significant and considerate expansions during the 1970s, this structure continues to serve its traditional function as the courthouse for Wollongong.

Wollongong Local Courthouse

Wollongong Local Court is a local court servicing the Illawarra region in New South Wales. It is located on the corner of Market and Church Streets. It shares a building with Wollongong District Court. It was built in 1885 and is listed on the Register of the National Estate.

Wollongong Local Court opens at 9am, with Court typically beginning at 9:30am. The courthouse consists of 6 courtrooms. Rooms 1, 2, 5 and 6 are used for Wollongong Local Court cases, while Rooms 3 and 4 are often used for District Court cases.

The Local Court handles lower-level offences (also known as summary offences) along with small civil matters. As a respected Wollongong law firm, Morrisons brings its extensive experience to represent clients in various cases heard at Wollongong Local Court.
