MORRISONS CRIMINAL ADVOCACY COMPETITION

On 6 and 7 November 2020, we held our annual criminal law advocacy competition – Morrisons Moot. The competition was established in 2019, at the University of Wollongong, to encourage aspiring advocates in criminal law and to provide them with an opportunity to develop their advocacy skills.

On 6 and 7 November 2020, we held our annual criminal law advocacy competition – Morrisons Moot. The competition was established in 2019, at the University of Wollongong, to encourage aspiring advocates in criminal law and to provide them with an opportunity to develop their advocacy skills.

The competition provides students with a practical experience in a mock criminal law case, similar to a case they may face in the early years of being a Solicitor. This year saw competitors representing either the prosecution or defence in a mock sentencing in the District Court.

Over the 6th and 7th of November, competitors participated in preliminary and  semi-final rounds, before four students were selected for the grand final. This years grand final saw Annissa Jason and Ruby Evans represent the prosecution, while Jackson Cocks and Zane Wilde acted for the defence.

The grand final was judged by Matt Ward, Richard Cogswell SC (former District Court Judge) and Ed Anderson (Barrister). After both sides presented their submissions, and responded to questions from the judges, Ms Jason and Ms Evans were awarded the winners of this years competition. Both teams received cash prizes for their excellent work in the competition. Ms Evans and Mr Cocks were also awarded ‘Best Advocate’ and have been offered an opportunity for an advocacy internship at Morrisons.

We would like to thank the University of Wollongong Law Students’ Society for their assistance in the preparation and running of the competition. We are also grateful to the Illawarra Mercury for covering the event, you can read their article here:
