Keeping it all legal

Whether we like it or not, every one of us has an interaction with the law on a daily basis. This may be driving a car, signing a contract or being charged with a criminal offence.

Morrisons, a boutique criminal law firm in Wollongong, specialise in criminal and traffic law.

The firm is run by partners Graeme Morrison and Matthew Ward, who are both accredited specialists in criminal law as identified by the NSW Law Society.

The firm has an experienced team that assists people who are being investigated, or have been charged, with all types of offences ranging from drink driving to murder.

“We solely practice in these areas of law,” partner Matthew said. “The more the public can understand these laws, including their purpose and application, the greater the confidence in the administration of justice in our society.

“This is especially so in the area of criminal law, where one’s liberty is at stake.”

Morrisons look at Law Week, May 18-24, as not just one week, but something that the firm tries to promote throughout the year.

For example, they sponsor and create advocacy competitions at UOW.

Last year was the inaugural Morrisons Criminal Advocacy Competition designed to assist students in working on their advocacy skills and appearing in court for people charged with criminal offences.

“Morrisons also sponsor the Senior Mooting competition run by the UOW Law Students Society,” Matthew said. “I am giving a talk to the UOW Law Students Society on Wednesday re advocacy and the upcoming senior mooting competition.”

COVID-19 has had an impact on law firms but Morrisons are well prepared.

“We have put measures in place to ensure the safety of our staff and clients,” Matthew said. “This has included operating our office remotely and utilising technology to continue to provide a high quality of service to our clients. We have also transitioned to being contactable 24 hours a day, seven days a week via telephone.”

Morrisons comprises of two partners – Graeme Morrison and Matthew Ward. They have three further members and are hiring another solicitor.
